Shimar Recycling Website

Shimar’s website, before this year’s refresh.

What do you do when you take over an existing business and want to start a marketing campaign, but your website is stuck in the early 2000s? You follow Shimar Recycling’s example and contact the team at HALO 22 for a website refresh.

One of our long-time clients reached out to us with the goal of not only redesigning the Shimar website, but restructuring its content. This plan would improve user experience by providing a tailored flow of information—and boost overall functionality across devices. The constraints? The new build needed to be easy for their leadership team to keep up-to-date, and include forms to make customer contacts a breeze.

This is why we chose Squarespace as Shimar’s new platform. Even if you have little to no website editing experience, it’s easy to use and comes with a thorough, up-to-date Help Center to walk you through any task on the site. (As a bonus, we include our own documentation to make it even easier to get started managing your content.) Squarespace’s ease of use also encourages regular updates, meaning your website won’t be prone to becoming a time capsule.

As with all our web projects, we started with a content audit to help us craft a strong information architecture (IA). We aimed to clean up and modernize via a streamlined header navigation and a supplemental footer with links to all top-level pages. It’s a technique that allows us to focus the audience’s attention on the sections that matter the most to most people. This task included redrafting page content to deliver a more thorough, clear explanation of services, recyclables, customer types, and more. To be successful, website content must be intentionally written. You don’t need to be an expert in search engine optimization, either. The foundation is simple: Write for your audience. Develop clear messaging and clear pathways to action that serve your audience’s needs. It helps them quickly find what they’re looking for on the site. The more you stick to that, the more traffic and action you’re likely to receive.

But it’s not all about words. Shimar needed new photography to supplement its written content. David Spratte, HALO 22’s founder and creative director, led a photoshoot with Shimar’s team to help add a personal touch to the website. The new shots visualize Shimar’s core services, accepted recyclables, and their crew. They also establish Shimar’s recycling expertise and methods, alongside their accessibility as a local company with a dedicated team. Better photography makes your website more informative and personable, which is a huge win.

Above, a selection of Spratte’s shots while on site at Shimar. Our goal? Visualizing more of their services, accepted recyclables, and team.

The rest was moving all the new content into Squarespace, and using Shimar’s existing brand (with some minor refinements) to customize the look and feel. That, and providing customized forms to allow Shimar to collect customer information more efficiently. They now have a contact form, work order form, and quote request form to link out by function. It’s a standardized way to gather information, making form entries more searchable in your inbox—and potentially more accessible to your team, if you share a form entry backup in Google Drive. (Add a backup storage method. #noregrets)

The end result is a clearer, more functional website that works well across all devices. We’ve already received positive feedback from Shimar’s team on how well the new site is working for them, and we’re excited to see how it serves their upcoming marketing campaigns in 2026.
